Tash Sultana

Natasha "Tash" Sultana was born in Melbourne on June 15, 1995

A multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, producer, and gender-fluid engineer, they have been hailed as one of Australia's most hardworking musical exports. Tash started playing the guitar at the age of 3 after receiving it as a gift from their late grandfather. From there, Tash began collecting other instruments such as piano/keyboard/synth, bass, drums/percussion, beatmaking/sampling, beatboxing, trumpet, saxophone, flute, mandolin, oud, harmonica, lap steel, pan flute, and looped them together in performances, combining percussive and finger-tapping guitar styles with a vocal range that spans 5 octaves.

Let's take a step back. Before reaching this point, Tash Sultana had to face incredibly tough trials, trials without which they probably wouldn't have been able to get where they are now.

Certainly, dedication and passion for music are innate, but a particular journey "forced" them to dedicate their soul and body to music, managing to be saved by it. At the age of 13, Tash performed at open mic nights up to six times a week throughout the state of Victoria. By the age of 17, the Australian had experimented with a high number of drugs and would probably have continued to do so if it hadn't reached the point of facing a severe psychosis caused by drug abuse.

Their last experience with hallucinogenic mushrooms was so terrible that it didn't stop after a few hours, as often happens, but lasted for nine long months. During this period, the musician struggled even to distinguish fantasy from reality.

They began their musical career by playing on the streets of Melbourne, driven by the difficulty of finding employment due to prejudice against their past.

From 2008 to 2012, she was the lead singer of the band Mindpilot alongside Patrick O'Brien, Emily Daye, and David Herbert. This band won several Battle of the Bands competitions in Melbourne. The band disbanded in 2012.

In 2016, she shared the video of "Jungle" (directly from her bedroom), which reached over a million views in five days, and since then has accumulated over forty million views. In the same year, she won the Triple J's J Award for Artist of the Year, thanks to two of her songs that were voted in the Triple J Hottest 100, "Jungle" and "Notion".

In June 2016, she joined the Australian independent label Lemon Tree Music. She spent time in the recording studio with producer Nikita Miltiadou and began working on the release of the EP Notion.

In September 2016, she released the EP through the independent record label, Lonely Lands Records.

The EP reached the peak position of number eight on the ARIA (Australian Recording Industry Association) Album Chart.

She later performed at the Woodford Folk Festival, Southbound, and the St. Jerome Laneway Festival.

It's safe to say that Tash Sultana was saved by music. In addition to the standard therapy required to treat her psychosis, the Aussie artist immersed herself in music, learning from scratch and continuously honing her skills.

In April 2017, Tash released "Murder to the Mind," the first single following the release of Notion (produced during the sessions with Miltiadou).

It reached number fifty-nine on the ARIA Australian Singles Chart.

Not long after the release of "Murder to the Mind," Tash was diagnosed with laryngitis and was forced to cancel and reschedule shows across Australia.

In an interview in June 2017, they stated to Fairfax that their debut album was scheduled for April 2018, after which they planned to embark on a tour, record a second album, go on another tour, and then take a break and return to normal life.

On July 25, 2017, they announced the Homecoming Tour, which included shows in Adelaide (Entertainment Center), Sydney (Hordern Pavilion), Fremantle (Arts Center), Margaret River (3 Oceans Winery), Melbourne (Margaret Court Arena), and Noosa (Noosa Sporting Grounds), with Pierce Brothers and Willow Beats as supporting acts.

In October 2017, Sultana announced the premiere of a new single, "Mystik," on Triple J.

Also in October, they made their late-night television debut in the United States on Late Night with Seth Meyers, performing "Jungle."

In the same year, they were nominated for four ARIA Awards: Breakthrough Artist, Best Independent Release, Best Blues and Roots Album, and Best Australian Live Act

After the Homecoming Tour, they continued working on their debut LP, Flow State.

On June 13, 2018, they released a message on Facebook to their fans, which was a preview of the music video for their new single titled "Salvation," accompanied by studio footage.

In the same month, they announced that the new single would premiere on Triple J on June 21, 2018, and would be released the following day.

On June 21, 2018, the release date of the album was announced, which was August 31, 2018. The preview tracklist included previously released songs such as "Mystik," "Murder to the Mind," "Harvest Love," and "Free Mind."

On July 10, 2019, they released their first collaboration song, "Talk It Out," featuring Australian singer Matt Corby. The third and final single for Tash in 2019 was the song "Daydreaming," a collaboration with Milky Chance.

The album "Flow State" was released by Lonely Lands Records, distributed by Sony Music Australia in the same state, and by Mom + Pop Music in the rest of the world.

"Flow State" reached the second position on the ARIA album charts.

In February 2019, they performed as a headliner on the biggest stages in Australia, including a sold-out show at Melbourne's Sidney Myer Music Bowl and Brisbane's Riverstage.

The first single of 2019 was "Can't Buy Happiness," released on April 4th.

In early 2020, she began recruiting musicians for live sessions through her social channels, stating that she "didn't have enough hands" to play all the instruments on stage simultaneously.

On February 26, 2020, she performed her last solo live show at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl in Melbourne as part of the one-day music festival fundraiser Down To Earth.

The event raised funds for bushfire relief efforts following the devastating wildfires that occurred during the Black Summer in Australia.

In April 2020, she added new members to her working group to form a band, enhancing her songs during live studio sessions.

She later released her first single of 2020, "Pretty Lady," on April 9. The song premiered on Triple J Breakfast.

Shortly after, Tash released the music video for "Pretty Lady," featuring a selection of fans, friends, and family members dancing from all around the world.

Greed - Performance in Studio

In June 2020, she announced her next single, "Greed," which was released on June 20, 2020.

This was followed by a third single, "Beyond The Pine," in September, and a fourth single, "Willow Tree," in October, featuring Australian rapper Jerome Farah.

On the same day as the release of "Willow Tree," she unveiled her new album "Terra Firma," which would be released on February 19, 2021, receiving subsequent generally favorable reviews from critics.

Written and recorded over a period of nearly two years, between 2019 and 2021, Terra Firma saw Tash taking the helm of the entire creative process.

She recorded, engineered, performed, arranged, and produced the album in its entirety.

On January 22, 2021, she released the fifth and final single from Terra Firma, "Sweet & Dandy."

In 2021, the artist announced a tour in the United Kingdom and Europe in support of Terra Firma.

For the performance at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado (USA), she sold 10,000 tickets in five minutes.

For 2022, a tour is planned that includes North America and Europe.

On February 18, 2022, she released "Coma," the lead single from the album MTV Unplugged, Live in Melbourne, scheduled for release on June 3, 2022.

The album is a limited edition with only 1500 copies.

This album is her first live recorded album, recorded at Chapel Off Chapel in Melbourne.

Lives 2022 in Italy

Tash Sultana - Live performance in Milan - Circolo Magnolia 2022

The Australian artist's 2022 European tour included two cities in Italy, specifically Turin and Milan. After two years of pandemic, the anticipation for the presentation of her album Terra Firma was finally over.

The first stop was at the TOday's Festival in Turin, held at Spazio211 and Ex Fabbrica Incet. It was a three-day event scheduled for the last weekend of August, where Tash was the closing star of the first night.

The festival began around 7 PM on Friday, August 26, 2022, with the Hawaiian band Eli Smart, followed by Hurray for Riff Raff and Black Country New Road.

The music blended seamlessly with the crowd, creating an immersive synergy on a late summer evening.

Concert Tash Sultana - TOday's Festival in Turin

It was the first time I had the opportunity to attend a live concert by Tash Sultana, and even in my wildest dreams, I couldn't have imagined such a profound whirlwind of emotions.

The live performance was structured around the five elements, the primary essence of the message within it, namely:

water

WATER

The song "Pretty Lady" represents water

The excitement, movement, and the beginning of a new chapter

In addition to being a very personal lyrics, tied to the love for their partner.

earth

EARTH

The song "Greed" represents earth

The stability, foundation, and reclaiming of your potential.

Examining how the world of fame, recognition, and success relates to money. How one must manage the flow that all of this brings to an individual's soul.

air

AIR

The song "Beyond The Pine" represents air

Creativity; new beginnings and a reminder to stay present.

A personal introspection on surrendering to love.

fire

FIRE

The song "Willow Tree" represents fire.

Vitality, transformation, the ability to grow, change, and adapt

It describes the realization of living a dream that has been built over time with firm conviction.

spirit

SPIRIT

There is no specific song that directly represents the concept of spirit, as every track on the album refers to it through various facets.

Unity, karma, the idea that the spirit remains infinite for the good things you attribute throughout our existence.

The second and final Italian stop is in Milan, at Circolo Magnolia, on August 30, 2022. The concert has been sold out for months, like almost all of Tash's shows, and the line at the gate opening is already quite long, extending for several meters. The front rows are already being stormed, as nobody wants to miss a single minute of the vibrations that the artist is able to emanate.
